Can money buy everything: The marketisation of society?

1. Up for sale.
2. Civic values/goods that markets do not honour they can't buy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In my opinion we can find both cases but in different kinds of person. According to the video we saw, the only limit we find in the society is the civic sense, which is a comfortable feeling. We feel that we are taking part of system that protects us, and we sacrifice some things to keep it. So the key of the problem is to discover the reason that makes the difference.

On one hand, we have the people who don't have civic sense, they fell superior or inferior. For example, some rich people, maybe because they feel upper than the rest, they don't coincide with majorities' opinion. These people believe that they have enough money to buy almost everything and it's maybe true, they can contract personal workers, they can buy and do any sort of thing... In this group we can include people who have been separated from the rest of the society so they are not grateful with the others and their objectives are selfish. In this group, in my opinion, we also can put people without economic resources which feel spiteful against the society.

On the other hand we find, in my opinion, the majority of the population: educated people by the current system. It's the biggest group and they have a community sense, they fit in and participate actively, working and spending.

To resume, we can not find just a uniform ideology nowadays instead of this we have a distinguished two points of view.

Dear sir,
First of all, I would like to say that I admire you so much. You are doing a fantastic job. I am so glad with your economic policy. But I think that build a noisy airport near the residence zone is a big mistake. So I would like to ask for a project's reconsideration.

I appreciate the commercial potential an airport can bring to the town. Adding to that, it can increase foreign visitors. But the town's committee agree that it will bring many health problems and it will be dangerous. We understand the main function of a government is to protect society's lifes while people give their freedom to the commanders. If you keep moving forward with your project, you will not fight for our health and then you will dump out Human Rights ("everybody has their own freedom just for being human").

All in all, I would be grateful if you change the airport location. I'm looking forward to receiving your answer.

Yours sincerelly.

Major of Sant Llorenç.

Interview with a career expert

Good morning everyone. Today, here in "What happens Castelló?", we are going to interview Mary McCarley, the most famous engineer in the world, currently working in the U.S government.

- Hi Mary. First of all, how are you?

- God morning John, I'm fine thank you, just a bit asleep.

-  Let's start with the interview. You are working as an engineer, aren't you?

- Yes, since 1999.

- I suppose you studied engineering. Where did you get your degree?

- Well, I studied in the local University but then I did the master in France because I wanted to learn the language.

- How many years has it token?

- Hmm... Six years, it seems a lot but when you're there it passes quite fast.

- How did you felt when you got your first job?

- Wow, there was an amazing shock of emotins inside my brain. I was terrified to start a new step of my life and to have responsability for the first time. However, I was excited to take part in the industrial world and have the posibility to learn new techniques. Adding to that, I was going to earn money, so it was a turn to the right for me.

- Jaja, have you been in other companies? If so, how many?

- Yes I have worked in... five different companies but just at four as engineer.

- Is hard to be engineer?

- No, well... it depends on your interest in front of new technologies.

- Does your job let you free time?

- An engineer schedule is similiar to all the other jobs... But  my current job takes me a lot of time and it's hard to work for the U.S government.

- Do you recommend to be an engineer?

- Hmm... It's not a bed of roses, sincerally. You have to work. But which is an easy career? Everybody must do whatever they want.

- Okay Mary, thank you very much.

- It has been a pleasure.

Tomorrow we have a surprise to our spectators. Don't miss the next program. Byebye from "What happens Castelló?". See you tomorrow.

Are we too dependant on mobile phones?

It's said that young people are the most nomophobic group, and it should be true, but there is a wide range of people which is addicted to electronic devices like mobile phones.

Firstly, mobiles are really useful. In fact, the have been porbably the most important discovery for several years ago. It's very easy to understand, mobile phones are even faster and more functional than computers, furthermore they can call, take and share photos quickly, they have alarm and hundreds of applications... That's why a lot of people use it daily. It's also said that children soak up information like a sponge. For these reasons we "need" it and in some cases, too much.

But, in my opinion, every new discovered stuff needs a testing period in order to find out all the challenges it can drive. Nowadays we are in the mobile phone's testing time and, so far, we are using it too much. We must try to control this addiction and be aware of the devices' radiation.

All in all, mobile phones are so interesting and useful but we must watch closely its adiction and its possible problems.

A soulmate for me

Actually, I've never though about it. Are you sure that everybody has one soulmate? I don't think so, in my opinion we just create our perfect idea of person according to the person we have fallen in love with. So, to me, my soulmate must have the following attributes:

The most important thing is that she has to be a girl. Then she has to have a cute face with a nice smile, her eyes and hair can be of different colours but I prefer bright ones. She must be tall, fit and slin, in short good looking.

Some features about her character must be similiar to mine but not all of them. I appreciate morality and honesty very much. Obviously she must be good-tempered and independent (in some cases). So my perfect girl must be a good person.

All in all, I've written a society's model of girl because it's difficult to describe my soulmate. Probably, a girl with the above qualities might not stay with me so I will search another kind of person, but I'm not worried about it. As I said before, everybody finds his/her soulmate in the person who loves.

Presentation (10%)
Do you use any resources? Are the resources relevant and attractive and focused on the topic? Do they support your presentation? Is the timing 5-7 minutes?

I used a Prezi which is always useful, I put in it all the titles and some images to make my presentation understandable. I also brought the home model in order to entretain the crowd a bit, that made longer my presentation. I don't know  how much time I was speaking but I calculated to speak more or less five minutes without the home model.

10
Body language and eye contact (10%)
Are you looking at your audience most of the time? Are you reading occasionally from your notes? Are you doing any gestures / movement to hold the attention of the audience?

I didn't do it, I said the text without looking any note, but I was so nervous that I whatched too much the images in the prezi.

7.5
Structure (10%)
Do you organize your ideas in order of importance? Do you use discourse markers to make your ideas more clear?

I tried to organize the text in three parts: the introduction, the main explanation and the conclusion.
In the introduction I said which parts I were going to explain: construction, software and hardware. In the main explanation I explained these parts and in the conclusion I showed the home model.

10
Content (35%)
Do you introduce interesting, NEW information to your audience? Is your information detailed and clear? Do you give / show examples? Is your information copied from a source or is it original? Did you look up information/facts/ideas in the Internet/books…?

I think so, it was my research project and I don't know if there were any expert in the room but I hope it was interesting for someone. All the information was original from my project. The information was well selected.

32.5
Language (25%)
Is your grammar correct, complex? Is your vocabulary rich and varied? Do you use sentence linkers? Do you use pause fillers?

I made a quite good presentation until I explained the home model, because I didn't study any technical words and I didn't know the correct vocabulary so it was a bit embarasing

12.5
Pronunciation  (10%)
Do you know how to pronounce all your words? Did you check the pronunciation with a dictionary, a classmate or the teacher? Do you change your tone of voice or use a monotone tone all the time? Did you speed in a fluid continuum or with breaks and interruptions?

Before the presentation I knew how to pronounce it all but when you're in front of the class you change  all, you try to pronounce it good but your mouth is thinking on which is next word has to say.

Oral presentation:
(-1) Project
TGIF, my name is Arià Canadell and I will do my research project’s oral presentation that is the building of a smart home controlled by mobile devices. First I will explain my project and finally I will show my home model.
0 Introduction
I chose a technologic topic because I’ve been always interested on it, it’s a science that evolves very fast and it has immediately effects on the society. I proposed myself to make a smart home model but a teacher said to me that it was too seen and he proposed me to control it by mobile devices. My research project is divided in the theoretical part and the explanation of my programs and the build process.
1 Home automation
I divide my theoretical part in these points. Firstly the definition of Home automation is “set of electronic elements connected between them to automate a house”. There are four types of components: sensors, transmitters, control unit and actuators. There are three types of systems; I used the centralized one where the control unit is the most important element. There are a lot of applications for example the power control, automation, security and communication.
2 Home model
I divide my home model in three parts to explain it, build process, hardware and software.
Build process
1-    I impressed my standard house from a design I made on a program called Sweet Home. Then I pasted it to a black foam board.
2-    I made the walls with the same material and I made the window joining pieces of plastic by clips, and all connected to the servo.
3-    I connected Dupont cables from the control unit to the actuators.
4-    This is the final result; we can see all sensor and the actuators on their places.
Hardware
I will not explain the hardware used because it’s not important now, I will just show the elements I used, and here there is the outline of the connections on the motherboard.
Software
I made two types of programs, the first one which was App Inventor is used to create the mobile application. The language to program is very visual.
Basic is the language that I used to introduce the instructions I wanted in the motherboard PICAXE. It’s easy to program with it because there are only a few important words from where you can create a lot of combinations.
Conclusion
It had been difficult to summarize my project in the presentation, and the translation has been shorter, so I have omitted a lot of information. There are a lot of technical words that I didn’t know before. I’m happy with the final result of my smart home model because I have reached all the objectives I proposed myself at the beginning even more complex than I thought. I hope you have enjoyed with my presentation. Now I will show you the home model. Do you have any question?.

Research paper abstract

My research project is the study of the construction of a home model controlled by mobile devices. I made it trying to be realistic according to the needs we use to have. I incorporate the mobile to control it to make the difference between similar projects. I concluded that it will make easier our daily routine but nowadays it has the price issue.

Pride and perjudice- Social class

In the book we read there were explained many situations that make us a little idea of the ancient social class and the difference between characters according to their incomes. The most surprising thing I saw in the novel was the interest showed by the mother to find a rich husband for her daughters. In that age rich families could only got married with other high class' families to preserve the richness and the reputation. Nowadays it's different in my opinion, I think that it can keep happening in some families but we can find some cases where a rich man meets a nice middle class girl and they get married, for example our prince Felipe and Leticia. I don't know the current situation in Britain but according to the video we saw in class there are still families who have a lot of money and they live in palaces, all inherited from their ancestors. They have different manners because they are educated different than the rest.

Can Internet change the world for the better?

It's obvious that Internet will change the world, but in which way?. Our children will have a completely different life. It has its advantatges and its disatvantatges. Let's discuss a few of them:

On the one hand, Internet will change the world in a positive way because it will make our daily routine easier. So far for example we can already buy an extensive sort of things without leaving home. Moreover, we can find an amazing amount of information. Consequently, we don't need to buy books and we must not kill as many trees as we used to. The last but not least positive effect it will have is that it's a powerful way to move forward in our society.

On the other hand, it can hurt us in some ways. To be in front of a screen for many hours can be unhealthy, the commodity I mentioned above can cause a lack of activity that it will increase the obesity. However, the main problem is the addiction that Internet produces. Adding to that, less personal comunication.

All in all, Internet will make better our lives but we have to control ourselves using it.

The necessity of laughing.

Everyone is different and every person has his own needs. Moreover, most of us have never known someone who has not laughed ever, that is why is difficult to say what would happen to someone who has never laughed. However, most humans need laugh loudly occasionally because it is proved that it gives physical health, mental health and social benefits.

The best known and the biggest benefits are probably the mental ones. Everyone knows that laughing deletes stress and anxiety and these are factors that makes you less happy. But, what about the physical benefits? Did you know that laughing prevents heart diseases? This is only one benefit; even though, there are a lot: it relaxes muscles, it boosts immunity… We can’t forget the social benefits too. It is helpful for strengthen relationships, for avoid conflicts, it improves teamwork...

What’s the purpose of our life? According to some philosophers, is the personal research to the happiness and the only way to achieve it, is laughter. We have a natural sense of humour, nobody taught us how we had to laugh when we were only days old, but we did. It’s the only natural way to express our feelings with the crying, obviously the first one express the happiness while the second one express bad feelings.

In our society we are educated to earn money and success in the future, so people think that their objectives in the world are to be as rich as possible the day of their death, it’s completely false! You won’t need any stuff in the place you will go after die... So we have to approach every second to be happy and delay the other as much as possible.

To sum up we would like to say “don’t worry, be happy because life lasts two days”. Worries bring problems while laugher eliminate them. Definitely laugh isn’t necessary to live but it’s required to live good, as a person. So, if you want to do a favor to yourself or to the people around you, laugh in every opportunity you have and give a smile to yourself and to everybody.

Obama's speech 2010

Hi Sonia! That's an email to explain you about my goals in a short and a long term. Until now I have earned good grades (in my opinion) and I have played tennis almost every afternoon, so that's a little challenge that I have successfuly passed. Some days I was tired after school but I always went to my tennis class because "you become good at things through hard work". I have lost a lot of matches, of course, but I have never given up. I won't probably be a professional tennis player (because it's very difficult) but I have the second chance to get a scholarship to study abroad (USA). In the future I will meet challenges more difficult but I have to face them and keep fighting like now.

Well, as I said in the introduction I have the chance to study in USA, clearly that's my short term goal. I have to put my best to earn good grades and achieve go there. Probably most of the people set their own goals but if I go there I will be too much focused trying to fit in and getting my university degree. I will meet challenges every day so it will be enought, my dream is to meet all this little goals.

Long term goals are difficult to say, our lives are changing every time. As Obama said "I have to discover what am good at" so my responsibility is to discover what it is and put my best to develop that. I want to pay my bills in the future so it's important to get a job but keep going with my own live if it's posible. Maybe that's my long term dream, to get a job but without forgetting my live, to approach every single free time I will have.

Obama's speech was very moving in my opinion, it's like a movie of the poor guy that meet all their goals after having a lot of chances to get a turn for the worse, but he didn't give up and nowadays is the president of the USA. It's a good example of success like Michael Jordan and J.K.Rowling. I liked so much the idea that every one of us are special doing something. While I was watching the vidio I was asking myself (me too?), but mr.Obama said it very convinced so may be true.

To sum up I must say that it's positive that we thing on dreams but is more important to approach our adolescence. There is a catalan expression that I love so much and says "what didn't kill you makes you stronger" similar to "You have to let your failatures teach you". I think that this sentences are my conclusion, I have to try and if I fail I have to learn of it and keep going, always keep going.

Final post

That's the last post of the course.... it's also the last homework I will do to first batchieller... what can I say... I'm very happy! After a hard working year I have finish all my work. As a philosopher said years ago, "the world is moved by pleasures", so now we will enjoy the next summer as it was the last.
This year I have improved my english level and these final essays are uncomparable with for example an interview that I made in the first term. I have an extra motivation in english lessons because I imagine myselve in a class in the USA. I will need to understand a lot of cientific names and what the teacher is saying... so I must study hard during next year. Now I'm waiting first exam results every second more nervous, I finish the exam happy but now I think that I will not pass.
Probably I will continue this blog next year and I promise that I will do it more regularly, because this year I have done the blog too much fast.

I hope you will have a good summer and a good relax! See you soon :)

Oral presentation
The right definition of “global warming” is, as you probably know, the rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since 19th century and it will rise more and more if we do nothing.
Scientists have spent decades looking for what is causing global warming. They've looked at the natural cycles and events that are known to influence climate. The only way to explain this rise of temperature is including the effect of greenhouse gases emitted by humans. We produce too much carbon dioxide, the vegetation can’t transform all the carbon dioxide so the gases are being kept in the atmosphere. How you can see in the second photo less re-radiated heats escapes into space. So the energy is not escaping well from the earth and we keep temperature. Our greenhouse effect that usually protect us, now are raising energy levels, but it’s our fault.
How you can see in this graphic the temperature is rising very slowly.  But this little change supposes big effects. Now Marc will explain some of the most important global warming’s effects on the earth.
All in all we have to say that our presentation was a bit similar to Ana’s and Xantal’s presentation because the topics were very related. Maybe we can say that humans are killing the earth with our pollution, in my opinion now we can do nothing because we are young and is very difficult that a simple person could make sense to a big company that they have to change. But we can give support to a NGO, working for them or giving money to them.
Finally we will show a you little video related with the effects of global warming

Global warming quiz

Firstly I have to say that the quiz was so strange, there were different types of questions: obvious ones (that almost everybody must know), logic questions (that maybe you don't know but after thinking them for a minute you can get the correct answer) and finally some questions that I answered luckily.
I have passed the global warming quiz but I have failed two questions. The third one asked me which planet was the most pollution by the runaway atmosphere gases, the chances were Mars, Earth, Venus and Jupiter. I put the earth because I thought that it was the only planet which have its own atmosphere, but that was wrong, the correct answer was Venus. Then the eleventh question "Hybrid cars get better gas mileage than cars with standard engines" was very confusing in my opinion. The correct answer was "sometimes" but I put always because I didn't know the answer.

Gap year

Gap year

The gap year is a period of time between the high school and the university. It's a good ocasion to get experience in the futures jobs. A lot of people try to do volunteer job because it's a very good chance to improve the CV.
On the one hand gap year students need a little break between two important stages of their lives. So they approach this year to keep positive energy and start the new course as good as posible. Many people who do this type of trips are more sociable and they are more preparate because they have take care of themselves during a year.
On the other hand, students can relax too much during this year and in this case is a lost year. In some places you must pay for the food and the house and not always the family can afford it. Also maybe the students reduce the capacity of studying during this time.
All in all it's a good experience for everybody if you take it as a work year, but if we take it as a holidays year we will have spend a good chance to improve like persons and we will have lost a valuable time.

Opinion essay

We have almost learnt to respect the world.

Nowadays we are emitting gases and waste without taking care of our planet. However, there are more campaigns against the big companies than decades ago.
Firstly, I can't say that we emite toxic products to the sea because I haven't seen it, but I have heard it. That's terrible because we are not only wiping out forests' specis but we are also killing shellfish.
Secondly, wherever you go we can see pollution and desforestation produced be humans. But while some people try to go green other people are earning money and pollute the earth.
Thirdly, instead of being responsible nowadays we will live in a dirty world because  yhe rubbish lasts a large period of time on the planet.
All in all we are being more responsible than years ago but we must keep improving if we want to live in a world with animals and vegetation.

I haven't got any plans. OK, see you later. Bye, Polly. Bye. (Sound of doorbell again.) OK.OK. I'm coming! (Opens door.) Oh, hi, Tania. How are things? I wasn't... I wasn't expecting you.

Tania Well, aren't you going to invite me in?

Jamie I... Yes, of course. Come in. (He sits in front of the TV looking worried.)

Tania Jamie, can you turn that thing off?

Jamie Hang on a second, can I just watch this?

Tania No, you can't. Jamie, I need to speak to you. This is important.

Jamie I'm listening, I'm listening.

Tania You aren't. You never listen. (Turns off the TV.)

Jamie Why did you do that?

Tania Jamie, it's over.

Jamie What do you mean? What's over?

Tania I mean you and me. Us. It's over

Jamie Oh, come on, Tania. Let's not start that again.

Tania A friend told me you were out on Friday night. Is that true?

Jamie Someone invited me to a party, OK?

Tania Ok for you, maybe, but you didn't want to ask me, did you?

Jamie I did. It isn't that simple.

Tania Well, my friend was there and she said that things were very simple for you. (Doorbell rings again.)

Jamie Hang on a second, Tania. I'm sure we can sort this out. (Jamie opens the door. Polly is there, smiling.) Polly. How did you...?

Polly I was just around the corner when I called you, so I thought... (Polly sees Tania.) Oh, sorry, I didn't realize....

Jamie (Nervous.) Tania, it's not what it seems! Let me explain, we...

Tania I don't want to hear your stupid explanations, you asshole!

Jamie But, Tania, listen....

Tania You were lying to me the whole time, weren't you?

Polly Maybe I should come again later...

Tania (Shouting.) You shut up!

Jamie Tania, don't talk to her like that! I'm sorry, Polly...

Tania What? Now you're even on her side? Are you fucking kidding me?

Jamie Tania, relax! She only asked me to...

Tania (Crying.) How... how could do this to me with that fucking... slut?

(Sound of footsteps)

Derek Hi Polly! (Derek kisses Polly) Er... What's going on here?

Polly Tania... This is Derek, my boyfriend.

Jamie You see Tania. I came across Polly, on the party and she asked to help her with her homework today...

Tania Oh my god... I'm so sorry...

An elephant personality is a person whose deliberate movements exude confidence and calm in all aspects of his or her life. While maybe not the king of the animal world, it is surely a member of the royal family. With an imposing physical presence and kind, spiritual demeanor, it moves easily through life where few barriers can hold it back.
There's a touch of cool in the stoic elephant that's appealing and reassuring. In all probability this composure stems from the knowledge that they have no natural enemies; even the lion and crocodile personalities pay homage by giving them a respectful berth. Only the unpredictable tiger has been known to trigger any semblance of anxiety in this otherwise fearless animal.
Slow to anger, they can sometimes exhibit a violent temper and use their powerful personality to humble and drive off unwanted intruders. Active during day and night, elephants take naps whenever the urge strikes.
When elephants set their minds to something, they don't waver in their commitment until the task is complete. Their intelligence, combined with a formidable personality, gives them a terrific advantage in business and social affairs while their communication skills make them first-rate leaders. Trustworthy and honest, they always let others know where they stand with regard to their feelings.
In business, elephants are usually found in leadership roles as executives or company presidents and, although highly paid, are never ostentatious with their wealth. In the top echelons of political office, elephant personalities are far more likely to be female. Male elephants are not as predictable as their counterparts, and females are more likely to maintain an even temper.

Like much predictions, they are general and they say most of humans' characteristics, they remark some humans qualities, so it's very difficult that they can be completely right and completly wrong too. I would like to say that I agree with their prediction because they usually say good qualities (" elephants are usually found in leadership roles as executives or company presidents"). That's for example one of my worst qualities, this year I was chosen in my class like our delegate but I dindn't enjoy it at all. My "deputy mayor" didn't let me a hand during the course so I had to work myself for the class, I didn't want responsabilities so I said Lourdes that I didn't want be the responable of our class.

They usually use your answers in the test to complet the text, they change the words and they add some examples  "Trustworthy and honest, they always let others know where they stand with regard to their feelings." That's an answer that I gave to them in their online test.

The jobs they have recommended to me are completly wrong, I will work in another way. They say some famous elephants.... but, am I like Pavarotti?

We try to introduce new information and we try that the information was funny and interesting but maybe we haven't give enough information. We get the information using Internet but we write the final text.

My text was correct and I used technical words, but when I did the presentation I changed a lot of words and I added new prepositions. I forget some phrases and I changed some words.
